Pattinaggio di velocità - Speed Skating

Passione, forza e... velocità

Passion, Strength, and... speed
The speed skating competitions at the XX Winter Olympic Games were held from February 11 to 25 at the Oval Lingotto in Turin.

There are many ways to be the fastest. You can even do it twice in the same competition. And there's no guarantee that the most significant record is the one set by the clock either. Take American Shani Davis, who won gold in the 100-metre speed skating event ahead of his fellow countryman Cheek and the favourite Wennemars of Holland. Davis - who also took silver in the 1,500 m - didn't just clock the fastest time; more importantly stili he was the first black athlete to take an individual title in the Winter Olympics. The fastest, in other words, to cross that particular finish line.

PATTINAGGIO DI VELOCITÀ: VINCERE PER BENEFICENZA

SPEED SKATING: WIN FOR CHARITY

Founded by former Norwegian Olympic long track champion Johann Olav Koss, "Right To Play"is a humanitarian organisation that works with children in refugee camps to steer them clear of crime and abuse. Joey Cheek donated the € 40,000 awarded to him by the US Olympic Committee for winning the 500 m gold and 1,000 m silver in Torino to the charity. The generosity of spirit demonstrated by Cheek, who has a background in in-line skating and won the 1,000 m bronze at Salt Lake City also moved other athletes, including Canadian 5,000 m gold medallist Clara Hughes, to make further donations to this excellent cause.

PATTINAGGIO DI VELOCITÀ: DA ROANA ALLE STELLE

SPEED SKATING: FROM ROANA TO THE STARS

In Holland, where speed skating makes front page news, this guy got more headlines than the Champions League for his two golds (1,500 m, ahead of Davis and Hedrick of the Usa, and the team pursuit) and one bronze (5,000 m, won by Hedrick). The 24-year-old, who hails from the small town of Roana near Vicenza, seems built to cleave the air. The speed skating cover boy of the Torino Olympic Cannes was successful in giving this adrenaline-fuelled sport the recognition it deserves in Italy.

There are only a couple hundred top-class competitive speed skaters in Italy. That fact alone illustrates the importance of Enrico Fabris's achievements. Fabris also won gold in the team pursuit event along with teammates Ippolito Sanfratello (holder of eight world in-line skating titles), youngster Matteo Anesi and Stefano Donagrandi, who competed in the qualifying rounds. Their fight to victory was helped when disaster struck the Dutch in the semis as Kramer tripped and fell (silver in the 5,000 m). But the Italians dominated Canada in the finaI round.
