Saranno due equipaggi di bob a risollevare il bilancio della spedizione italiana, fino a quel momento alquanto povero di risultati. Guidati da Lamberto Dalla Costa ed Eugenio Monti, i due mezzi azzurri (per la verità colorati di rosso fuoco), si misero alle spalle il forte equipaggio svizzero e consegnarono all’Italia una storica doppietta.

La tensione, la paura e le responsabilità non spaventavano Lamberto
Dalla Costa e Giacomo Conti (Italia I), che già nella prima manche piazzarono un
favoloso 1:22.00, con Italia II seconda a 73 centesimi e terza Germania I, addirittura a due secondi e 63
centesimi. I tedeschi erano i grandi favoriti perché potevano contare su
Andreas Ostler, due volte campione olimpico nel bob a due e quattro a Oslo nel
1952. Con questi distacchi gli unici che potevano impensierire Italia I erano Monti e Alverà (Italia II),
che nella seconda manche arrivarono a soli 8 centesimi da Dalla Costa e
Conti. Sarà la terza manche a scavare il solco definitivo per la vittoria
finale. Italia I vince l’oro olimpico su Italia II, argento con 1
secondo e 73 centesimi di distanza, terzi i rimontanti svizzeri Max
Angst e Harry Warburton a ben 7 secondi e 32 centesimi.
Tension, fear and responsibility did not frighten Lamberto Dalla Costa and Giacomo Conti (Italy I), who already in the first run posted a fabulous 1:22.00, with Italy II second at 73 hundredths and Germany I third at two seconds and 63 hundredths. The Germans were the big favorites because they could count on Andreas Ostler, twice Olympic champion in the two-man bobsleigh and four times in Oslo in 1952. With these gaps, the only ones who could worry Italy I were Monti and Alverà (Italy II), who, in the second run, arrived only 8 hundredths behind Dalla Costa and Conti. It will be the third heat to dig the final furrow for the final victory. Italy I won the Olympic gold medal over Italy II, silver with 1 second and 73 hundredths of a second, third were the Swiss Max Angst and Harry Warburton at 7 seconds and 32 hundredths.
Il bob a quattro azzurro, guidato da Eugenio Monti, vincerà l' argento, dietro gli elvetici, riscattando la sconfitta nel bob a due, dove si erano dovuti inchinare alla potenza delle due squadre italiane.
