L'udienza papale

Nel mese di aprile 1959, ricevendo i congressisti del C.S.I., il Santo Padre aveva manifestato il proposito di ricevere, in occasione dello svolgimento delle Olimpiadi, gli atleti partecipanti ai Giochi. Avvicinandosi la data d'inizio della XVII Olimpiade, furono predisposti contatti con la Santa Sede ed avuta la conferma che l'udienza si sarebbe tenuta, si approntarono tutti i servizi per provvedere alle esigenze logistiche per il trasporto degli atleti e le misure necessarie ad assicurare l'ordinato afflusso del pubblico. Contemporaneamente, in tutti i settori qualificati dell'Olimpiade, furono diramati inviti personali per la partecipazione all'Udienza a: Membri del C.I.O., dirigenti del C.O. e del C.O.N.I., attachés olimpici, giornalisti accreditati, capi delle Delegazioni internazionali e a tutti gli atleti. Alla vigilia dell'Udienza avevano data adesione 3.830 atleti di 72 Nazioni, ma al momento dell'Udienza fu possibile riscontrare un afflusso notevolmente maggiore, pervenuti sia con i 100 torpedoni già predisposti, sia con mezzi propri.

In the month of April 1959, on receiving the congressmen of the C.S.I., the Holy Father expressed his intention of receiving the athletes taking part in the Olympic Games. As the date of the start of the XVII Olympiad approached, contacts were made with the Holy See and having received confirmation that the audience would be held, all the services were prepared to provide for the logistic needs of the transport of the athletes and the measures necessary to ensure the orderly flow of the public. At the same time, personal invitations to attend the Hearing were issued to all the qualified sectors of the Olympiad: Members of the C.I.O., C.O. and C.O.N.I. officials, Olympic attachés, accredited journalists, Heads of International Delegations and all athletes. On the eve of the Audience, 3,830 athletes from 72 nations had signed up for the event, but at the time of the Audience, it was possible to see a much greater influx of athletes, who had arrived both with the 100 coaches already prepared and with their own vehicles.

Il Santo Padre scese in Piazza San Pietro alle 17,30 del 24 agosto, accolto dal vibrante applauso della folla che gremiva la Piazza in ogni parte, e dalle note dell'antico Inno Olimpico eseguito dalla Banda della Guardia Palatina.

The Pope arrived in St. Peter's Square at 5.30 p.m. on 24 August, greeted by the vibrant applause of the crowd that filled the square everywhere, and by the notes of the ancient Olympic anthem performed by the Band of the Palatine Guard.

Subito dopo l'On. Andreotti, Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore dei Giochi, rivolse al Santo Padre un indirizzo di omaggio in lingua latina, esprimendo i sentimenti di omaggio e di gratitudine del Comitato Organizzatore e di tutti i presenti. Inoltre, assicurando il gradimento da parte dei Dirigenti e degli Atleti, pregò il Santo Padre di rivolgere una allocuzione, per solennizzare l'avvenimento.

Immediately afterwards, the Hon. Andreotti, President of the Organising Committee of the Games, addressed an address of homage to the Holy Father in Latin, expressing the feelings of homage and gratitude of the Organising Committee and all those present. Assuring the approval of the officials and athletes, he asked the Holy Father to make a speech to mark the occasion.

In quella occasione, il Papa consegnò a tutti i partecipanti una medaglia eseguita dallo scultore italiano Giacomo Manzù, recante l'effige del Papa in mozzetta e camauro ed al recto una pianta d'olivo in fiore con la scritta "Oboedientia et pax".

On that occasion, the Pope presented all the participants with a medal made by the Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù, bearing the effigy of the Pope in mozzetta and camauro and on the front a flowering olive tree with the inscription "Oboedientia et pax"

Il 29 agosto 1960, una Udienza particolare fu riservata ai Membri del Comitato Internazionale Olimpico, nella Sala dello Svizzero al Palazzo di Castelgandolfo. Il distinto gruppo, guidato dal Presidente del C. I. O., Avery Brundage, comprendeva quasi tutti i Membri accompagnati dalle rispettive consorti, il Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore dei Giochi, On. Andreotti, il Presidente del C. O. N. I., Avv. Onesti.

On 29 August 1960, a special Audience was reserved for the Members of the International Olympic Committee in the Sala dello Svizzero at Castelgandolfo Palace. The distinguished group, led by the President of the I.O.C., Avery Brundage, included almost all the Members accompanied by their wives, the President of the Organising Committee of the Games Giulio Onesti..
